German logistics major DHL Supply Chain, is to build a million-square foot MYR100 million (US$32 million) warehouse in Shah Alam, making it the biggest warehouse in Malaysia and more than doubling company warehousing capacity in the country.

The Malaysia Integrated Logistics Centre (ILC) features Malaysia's first double-ramp system, providing state-of-the-art solutions for fast moving consumer goods, technology, automotive, engineering and manufacturing and pharma products.

"The contract logistics market in Malaysia has shown impressive growth. We've therefore identified the country as key to our growth strategy and made the important investment," said country manager Prakash Rochlani.

"We plan to create a true multi-user site to support customers across a broad spectrum of industries who will benefit from the synergies created from sharing resources. "Warehousing services will be offered with a wide variety of complementary activities to optimise our customer's supply chain activities; including co-packing and technical services," said Mr Rochlani.

The two-storey structure will have 111 loading docks and will cater for different vehicle types, and provide bonded and environment controlled storage. The facility will be certified to TAPA Class A and Quality Management Standard ISO9001:2008.

The facility will be the third DHL Supply Chain facility opened in Malaysia this year following the new facilities in Penang and Johor. The company plans to open six branch networks, expanding the current transport fleet by 50 trucks, constructing six more multi-purpose facilities, as well as hiring 500 people.

"DHL Supply Chain Malaysia has also initiated a training management programme for Malaysian graduates, with the aim of hiring 100 graduate trainees over five years.

These will be trained across multi departments using DHL's Supply Chain best-practices and industry expertise and in line with the nation's plan to create more knowledge-based workers," said Mr Rochlani.
